Mark and I like to try new ‘small bites’ whenever possible. Why small bites? We get home from work at about the same time and usually Mark is starving – ravenous, can’t function until he eats -must have food now. To avoid that hunger leading to the consumption of copious amounts of salty, processed snacks, we have been working to find easy, ready-to-go snacks between lunch and dinner.
We recently discovered a new ‘small bite’ favorite at Standard Market. We stopped at Standard Market in Westmont, IL, after a day full of running errands. If you are ever in the suburbs of Chicago and looking for a treasure trove of chef-inspired produce, meats, cheeses, wines, bakery items, delicatessen delights & more, this is a must-stop-shop. Additionally, there is a small restaurant within the ‘market.’ The day before my wedding, my mother, future mother-in-law and bridesmaids had lunch at Standard Market Grill after having our nails done. It was a great way to eat good, healthy food before my big-day.
Needless to say, I like Standard Market a lot. This time, however, Mark and I stopped at Standard Market solely for the meat section. While there, we passed by a sampling in the wine and cheese area. On the tasting block? A cherry fennel jam with goat cheese on little crackers. It made me nervous. Cherries and fennel? I thought to myself, these two cannot go together! BUT the combination was exceptional. The ‘spiced’ cherry fennel jam is made by a company located in Wheeling, IL, called Kissel’s.
As a ‘small bite’ before dinner last night, we had the cherry fennel jam atop little flatbreads with both soft, spreadable goat cheese and a hard cheese called Cave Aged Chandoka from LaClare Farms, WI. Easy, tasty and going on the Thanksgiving appetizer menu!
